Scór 2024

milltowngaa

Sunday 24th March 2024 saw the county final of Scór Sinsir take place in Allenwood. Milltown had a strong field, with participants in Solo Singing, Céilí Dancing, Ballad Group, Novelty Act and Quiz Time.

First up were our Céilí dancers. It was the first year since 2019 (when our dancers reached the Leinster Final) that we had dancers in the competition. It was great to see Milltown dancers on the boards once more, and they deservedly took home the title.

Alan Davoran was next up, and gave a memorable performance of Four Green Fields in the Solo Singing. As is always the case in the Solo Singing competition, there was strong competition, with two other former county champions in the field with him. However, Alan was undaunted, and deservedly took the title.

Following Alan was our Ballad Group, and, for the second year in a row, they stormed to victory with very polished performances of Song for Ireland and Only Our Rivers.

Our Novelty Act felt there was more to be had from the script they won them the 2023 county final ("What's On The Box"), and went back to the well again with it. It was a very polished performance and produced a lot of laughs from the audience on the night. Once again, they were worthy winners.

Rounding off the night was our Quiz Team, who were defending their crown. In a repeat of the 2023 final, they reached the stage section along with Allenwood and Clogherinkoe, with only a few points between them. Unfortunately, unlike 2023, they were unable to make up the ground on the stage, and lost out to a strong Allenwood finish.

Well done to all!

Céilí Dancing: Lisa Byrne, Clíodhna Malone, Chloe Downey, Aoife Buckley, Ciara Buckley and Mia Cullen

Solo Singing: Alan Davoren

Ballad Group: Alan Davoren, Owen Fogarty, Eimear Shannon, Therese O Reilly & Leo Shannon

Novelty Act: Michelle O Hara, Enda Dowling, Breda McHale, Shane Shannon, Tom Malone & Emmet Mulhall

Quiz Team: Noel Dunne, Noel Shannon, Shane Dunne & Martin Dunne

None of our acts had long to wait for the Leinster Semi Finals, with a trip to Oulart The Ballagh in Wexford on the cards on Saturday 6th April.

As always at this stage of the competition, the competition was fierce, with the standard of competition extremely high. However, our Céilí Dancers and Novelty Act made it through to the Leinster Final. All roads now led to The Downs GAA club in Westmeath on Sunday 21st April.

Despite the high hopes travelling down to Westmeath, on the day, the luck wasn't with us. And our run of misfortune in The Downs continues.

Still, if you're disappointed to not win a provincial title, you must be doing something right.

Onwards to Scór na nÓg now.

Scór na nÓg

On Sunday 10th November in Allenwood, Scór na nÓg made a welcome return. Milltown were well represented as usual, with entries in Solo Singing, Recitation, Ballad Group and the Quiz. And this showed in the large vocal crowd in attendance.

First up was Eimear Byrne in the Solo Singing. Eimear sang a beautiful version of The Parting Glass, and can consider herself unluckly not to have carried home the title. However, Eimear would be back with the Ballad Group, so this was merely a warm up.

Aoileann Fogarty represented us in the Recitation. In a piece the 11 year old composed herself about the Goddesses of Ireland, and dressed like a Celtic goddess herself, Aoileann displayed talent beyond her years. It raised more than a few eyebrows in the partisan crowd when we found she didn't win the title. But she has a great future ahead of here, and will be back. Our Ballad Group was next, and with brilliant versions of Grace and City of Chicago, they carried the day for the little village. The quality of the harmonies and togetherness of the group were something to behold.

Earlier in the evening, our quiz team were pushed all the way yet again by Maynooth in defence of their crown. After the first 10 rounds only 1 point separated them. And at the end of the stage round it remained the same.

In the Leinster Semi-Final in Tullamore, the Ballad Group were up against some stiff opposition, in particular from Longford and Westmeath. Our quintet performed brilliantly though and won their way through to the final! Queue great celebrations and a trip to the chippers on the way home.

Onwards now to a Leinster Final in Summerhill for the Ballad Group and the Quiz Team on 30th November. As someone said during the week, we're getting fond of Leinster Finals in November! Fingers and toes crossed!

Solo Singing: Eimear Byrne

Recitation: Aoileann Fogarty

Ballad Group: Seán Kelly, Eoghan Delahunty, Eimear Byrne, Kristen Meehan, Nicole Driver

Quiz Team: Patrick Shannon, Eoghan Delahunty, Anna Mulpeter, Killian O Connor, Kyle Carter
